Looking at a Kim Sang Hoon piece is like staring at the undulating surface of water, everything in a pulsating flux. Playing with shadows and waves, the Korean-born New York-based designer takes the organic and cuts it into individual pieces, creating works of art that offer both solidity and transparency. A staple at Design Miami since 2011, Hoon has found commercial success with his Phenomena screen, a wooden room divider that is nothing like that paper-and-balsa-wood thing you bought for your college dorm back in the day. Instead, Hoon makes things with bulk and heft, substantial and utilitarian. Richard Serra-light, if you will. Like really, really light.
