Just smooth and flat
We wanted to make a boardshort that got in the way as little as possible. Made out of a poly/stretch blend, the fabric was designed so that the side facing your body is as flat as can be, reducing bulk and subsequent chafing. Save for waistband, the entire short was made using no-sew welding, further reducing unnecessary fabric (and weight). The curved waistband was designed to stay on your body, hugging the hip with the help of a special facing to keep them from slipping off. In terms of closure, we did make a real effort here. First, we’ve got a gusset at the fly, keeping everything in that needs to be in, and tied it off with a silicone-dipped drawcord… which brings us to the eyelets they’re threaded through. Instead of traditional metal eyelets, we bonded together two layers of fabric and made a laser-cut opening flanked by an additional layer of heat-seal tape for added strength. Then we went ahead and used that same tape at the hem, making it so we only had to use a single layer of fabric—no bulky turned-up hem here, just smooth and flat, as streamlined as possible. And as for the laser-cut holes you’ll find: The ones on the side are for ventilation on land; the ones on the pockets are for drainage when you’re in water.
